" Big Kid Area"

The "Big Kid Area" is currently in retirement, as the children enrolled right now are all
younger. However, I will keep this section on the web site to show you the versatility of
the playroom - I tend to change it around according to the ever changing needs of the
children in care. This area is pretty much self explanatory.  Children aged over 3 1/2
are allowed to play here, with toys and activities that contain small parts.  This enables
them to be "big kids", and at the same time keeps the younger children away from
potentially harmful objects.  The older children are able to do puzzles; use
manipulatives; play with legos; draw, write and create - all without the younger ones
disrupting and destroying.
Mr. Potato Head - a timeless toy with endless
possibilities.
Writing materials are readily available to the "big kids".  The
younger children are allowed access to pencils, markers etc only
under close supervision.
Puzzles such as these - "I-Spy" puzzles, are the same as the books that go by the same name.
As you can see, the children really have to search for the matching piece - and feel a great
sense of accomplishment when they find it.
"Sculptures" created by a child can be safely displayed in the "big kid area"
without fear of them being inadvertently broken by the younger children.
This Lego table is a fairly new addition.  Having the three building plates allows several
children to work together, and in doing so they learn co-operation and sharing.
